About Shanna

Shanna (rhymes with banana) Upchurch writes picture books and middle grade novels. She grew up in rural Illinois, but now calls Texas home. Her books feature brave kids, awesome animals, and world-ending plots with big-hearted journeys. When she's not writing, you can find her hanging with honeybees in her apiary, digging up potatoes in the garden, or trying to keep her goats from climbing on the car (again). Her school visits are lively, hands-on events that leave kids excited to read and write and spend time outdoors.

What educators say

“Shanna's visit to our school was fantastic. She fully engaged our students from Pre-K to 5th grade. Her presentation was exciting and interactive. The picture book, The Honeybee Highway, was beautiful and educational. We loved having Shanna!”

— Susan Edminson, Elementary School Librarian

“THE HONEYBEE HIGHWAY is a fascinating, full-of-heart narrative about some of the most important inhabitants of our planet - honeybees! Through the kid-tastic voice of JJ, Upchurch shares a narrative I knew nothing about: the transportation of bees to farms around the country. Smith’s mesmerizing illustrations bring this joyful journey to life. Kids will love this poignant, bee-autiful read-aloud!”

— Kari Lavelle, Author of the Butt or Face series

“The Honeybee Highway is a STUNNING and sweet book that is hugely relevant to the programming we offer at the San Luis Obispo Children's Museum. The book is an absolute work of art.”

— Michelle Jenkins, Executive Director, San Luis Obispo Children's Museum
