What educators say
“Ms. Holyoke’s teaching style inspires a love for writing and helps students express themselves vividly. She engages even the most reluctant writers and encourages them to creatively translate their experiences onto paper. Our fourth-grade students gained valuable writing strategies that they apply in their writing process today.”
“Polly’s presentation and workshops were terrific. She did a wonderful job of sharing her writing process and getting the kids excited about creating their own stories. Following her visit, even some of my most reluctant readers began sharing books they’re working on. We can’t wait for Polly’s next visit.”
“This was the best author presentation I’ve attended. I loved that it was interactive and building on exactly what we do in the classroom. Several of my students are continuing the story they started that day. It matched perfectly with our curriculum, standards, and was very engaging!”
Visit formats
What a visit includes
I offer a 45 minute engaging assembly for grades 3-8 in which I discuss writing my first book with my best friend in 5th grade, how I research and plot my books, and I show images of my manuscript under revision. I also offer an assembly for K-2 in which I talk about my writing and use dolphins as a platform for reviewing elementary science concepts such as characteristics of mammals and habitat. I also teach a variety of fun writing workshops (45-60 min) that help to build students' fluency and confidence in their writing. I've taught Let's Get Specific, Let's Get Creative (grades 4-8) at hundreds of schools. In this workshop we work on choosing more specific/descriptive verbs and nouns, we discuss basic elements of a story, and then students write and share their stories.
Fees vary by format, travel, and your school's needs. Reach out directly for a quote and open dates.
