About Lalena
I love reading and drawing with kids! I'm a lifelong artist and writer who helped design the show Blue's Clues, and also create graphics for The New York Times. These skills combine in my book Friends Beyond Measure, a colorful friendship story told with hand-drawn diagrams, maps and charts. In my school visits, I share about my childhood and background, show how the book came to be, read, and create drawings or charts with student input. I love to incorporate my Spanish skills when asked, too!

What a visit includes
After sharing about my childhood and background, I use my book Friends Beyond Measure to explore storytelling with emotion, visual literacy, and the different ways charts, graphs and maps can be used to communicate feelings and thoughts as well as information. Then I invite student participation in creating a hand-drawn chart or diagram! And then open the floor for questions, if time allows. I can speak Spanish if desired.
