Kristin Nilsen
Author of big-hearted coming-of-age comedies for teens and tweens.
About Kristin
I'm a librarian/bookseller/author who has worked with children my entire career. I became a children's librarian because I had big feelings for the books I read as a kid; Judy Blume, Nancy Drew, and anything with a witch in it. Eventually I started writing my own stories because there was a seventh grader living in my head and she had things to say. I used my own grade school diaries to craft ultra-real, laugh-out-loud contemporary stories that feature adorkable characters, clueless families, cranky grandmas, wise besties, a variety of teachers, and lots of beloved pets. I like to take students through all the real-life stories that inspired my books and show how keeping a journal can help you write fiction (maybe even twenty, thirty or forty years from now!).

What educators say
“It was such an honor and a joy to have Kristin visit our little school in Bodega Bay! She helped me set up a surprise for my students which made it that much more fun them. Her audience, consisting of 24 K-5th graders, was completely engrossed by her! I have never seen that group so captivated by a guest speaker before! She generously shared her writing process, personal anecdotes, and answered every question they had with grace and a genuine interest. Having Kristin do this author visit was an experience that will stay with my young writers for years to come.”

What a visit includes
I'm happy to work with your needs but I prefer to work with one classroom at a time. My presentations are 45-60 minutes long and include a presentation on the real-life stories that inspired my books and a Q&A. I can also talk about journaling and how it helps your creative writing. I love book clubs and writing groups, too!
Fees vary by format, travel, and your school's needs. Reach out directly for a quote and open dates.
