About Charles

I've co-written and co-anthologized books ranging in age from Pre-K to senior year in college. Some of them are AFRICAN TOWN (co-written with Irene Latham) which won the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction, MASCOT (co-written with Traci Sorell) which an Honor from the American Indian Library Association, and THE MISTAKES THAT MADE US: CONFESSIONS FROM TWENTY POETS (co-edited with Irene Latham) which received a Notable Book Honor from NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English). School visits are so important because growing up being an unmotivated reader (except for sports), having an author visit my school -- which never happened from Pre-K to 12 -- might have sparked an interest in reading and writing that didn't manifest itself until I became a young adult.
